New World Order (after NSG and BREXIT) and India
NSG, BREXIT & International Treaties and India
"Self-interest First" is the only Rule that drives the decisions at international forums
Since 2000, I had an opportunity to work with many policy makers and ministers on various international trade issues and on WTO matters.
From the beginning I always I shared my views with all policy makers in open forums and in close door meetings, please ensure that commercial and strategic interest of India is protected.
The problem with many policy makers in India is they want to project India as champion of certain cause at international level like leader of developing countries, leaders of agriculture economies, etc. etc. This is nothing but trying to remain in illusion to project that we have become global power without putting house in order. Sometimes to please big powers like US and EU. In last 16 years, it is proven fact there is no friendship when it comes to self-interest.
On the other hand the biggest weakness is slow policy making process, crony capitalism and lack of leadership in India's private sector. They continue to behave like trader and lobby for short term interest. Industry associations are operating like event management companies. Their is no serious policy discussion happens in any industry forums. Policy making is also outsourced to any sponsor to save cost.
You will hardly find any outcome from so many industry conferences and discussions happening in India. Most will end up demanding some concessions or favours from government so that profit in balance sheets can look better, very often without doing any innovation and investments. Or they will end up with gala dinner and cultural programs. Organisers are busy in collecting sponsorship and participants enjoy paid holidays.
Now, India should relook are New World Order and plan a fresh.
After NSG, BREXIT and Presidential election in US India will have many opportunity to assert its position by keeping in mind just one agenda "What is Good for India?"
EU is in the process of disintegration politically as well as economically. Fragmented political interest can't have unified economic policy environment. This concept of EU is drag on many efficient countries due to many inefficient partners. Aging population and migration of people from Arab conflicts will raise serious issue on social stability due to different education level and beliefs.

Let us wait, after Britain, who is going to be the next raising red flag. These will be well to do countries, not those who need support from EU.
Outcome of NSG reinforces that dragons can't be vegetarian:
Are we ready to take on the might of dragon, if not it will continue to bit. If yes, one can tame it so some level, but genetic profile will not change. India must learn this lesson without remaining in illusion that cows and dragons can co-exist. In case of dragon, hurt the dragon when it pinches the most. One must plan and practice to become strong to give suitable reply.
Equations will Change in coming days:
In last two years it is very clear, global economy needs India's market to sustain its growth. India should learn to use its market to demand its share with interest from the world market. No is doing charity for us, why we should be generous.
Money Power and Market Power will drive the agenda:
Policy makers of India must learn to react fast without favouring crony capitalism. Let policy makes create an environment for wealth creation by all and develop policies for sections those who need support.
Develop policies to create vibrant economy. This will support employment generation as well.
Also measure the impact of all policies and impact their impact on transaction cost.
Also measure the impact of all policies and impact their impact on transaction cost.
All imported goods should be considered as drain of capital and cause of unemployment. Develop policies so that best possible substitute can be created. For that even exist laws needs to be changes do it.
As industry associations to work on action plan in time bound manner in place of doing unnecessary events. Industry association should also present the report on the innovations and developments done by their members.
Directors of all R&D facilities should be sent to ISRO for training on how to manage R&D facilities and deliver results.
Like corporate, let all R&D facilities give performance reports every three months. This should be vetted by Stakeholders, not internal committee. If they fail to deliver change the change the leadership of the institute.
Local media and political class should also learn to discuss what is good for India, in place of talking how to divide the society and encourage anti-social behaviour.
Media can play a big role as motivator & to create national pride for doing good for society. Media can ask corporate leaders about their innovations and benchmark them against the world's best.
I know many will say this is wishlist, yes, this is wishlist but very much do able. Let us use this opportunity to make India proud and prosperous.
As first step: Let India take a challenge to stop bringing any electronics goods from China and we will make world class products in house in India.
- Can't Reliance, TATA, Birla and Bharti do this? Why they are not doing should be studied?
- Can't government do away with laws which is becoming hurdle in doing this?
- Can we make corruption and adulteration offence against nation?
I feel when so many Chinese companies can do it, why India companies can't do it. Either they lack will or they lack leadership. Resources and talent are never an issue.
In my view, what is lacking is leadership in private sector. If private sector of India will gear up, country will stand with them.
Please keep in mind, Power makes lasting friendships. If India is not powerful economically and strategically, don't expect friendship in this world. International treaties will change its shape with time.
Indian policy planners should focus on what is good for India, rest will follow. There will be some pain initially but that will make us strong, provided we have honest desire to do so.
