Highest Cancer Cases in 100% Organic Production Belt
Two North East districts record highest cancer
incidence rate in India
A new report published by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under its National Cancer
Registry Programme (NCRP), recorded Aizawl in Mizoram and Papumpare in Arunachal Pradesh as districts with the
highest age adjusted cancer incidence rate in the country.
A Nandakumar, principal coordinator of NCRP, on Saturday said unhealthy lifestyle choices and increased consumption of
smoked meat and tobacco are to be blamed.
Age adjusted cancer incidence rate is a scientific method to compare aged patients and the young adults attacked by the
disease. It also takes into consideration the number of old and young people affected comprising a particular local population.
While Aizawl was found to have the highest cancer incidence rate in men with 271 affected in a population of 1,00,000,
Papaumpare was found to have the highest cancer incidence rate in women with 249 affected in a population of 1,00,000.
This is not the only issue to be worried about in the report from the northeast. The report said cervical cancer was a leading
form of the disease in Mizoram, Tripura and Nagaland.
The report also states that the Kamrup (Metro) district has the fourth highest cancer incidence rate among men in the country
with 206 affected in a population of 1,00,000. The rate is the same among women in the district and was found to be third
highest in the country. The district has also recorded the highest cases of gall bladder cancer in both men and women in the
country. Assam ranks third in the number of cases of oesophagal cancer in women.
In these locations, people produce and consume organic food. So, why blame agriculture technologies for the cancer?
It is the lifestyle which is the major factor. NGOs and Government should identify the proper cause and target the cause and do not look for excuses in agricultural practices for all the problems in health system.
