Should we celebrate Mother's Day?

Should we celebrate Mother's Day by keeping her kids hungry and deprived?

Who is accountable?   Can we do something?

Last week, on Mother's Day, I had an opportunity to pass through two the most beautiful and glamorous places of the Mother Earth. They were Cape Town in South Africa and Dubai. Every shopping mall and outlet was selling products to celebrate Mother's Day. No doubt, very noble cause and very important to say Thank you to Mother.

The display or glamour and cost of gifts were much higher than the average merchandise in the retail shop. Is Mother's day celebration is only for rich and well to do? Why?

Why there was nothing for an average person or poor person to celebrate? Why affordable items are not part of gift culture? Is there any correlation between cost of gift and actual feeling with honesty by which we can say thank you to Mother.

Why all the items displayed at retail outlets has to be expensive than the average price in the same category of items. Are we trying to en-cash the emotions of common man for the Mother? Are we selling emotions?

Are we honestly trying to say thank you to Mother for all the pain and suffering we gave to her during our upbringing and in many cases still continue to give pain in one way or the other.

Every one is entitled to his or her views. I am just trying to understand how the society at large thinks about these issues.

As far as I know, the biggest desire of every Mother is that her kids should remain healthy and happy.

Are we doing enough to give her true gifts, which she likes the most, means good healthy and safe environment for her kids?

In fact, animals and birds also struggle and fight for the safety of their kids.

When few million mother's are struggling to get basic food for her kids including infants, which type of Mother's Day Celebration we all are talking about.

The only way to keep our eyes off from the harsh reality is to declare, May 12th, as  Rich Mother's Day Celebration.  By doing so, at least rest of the population will not have any sense of guilt that we are not able to say thank you to our mother in style.

Alternate option is let us work hard to ensure that every mother can live with sense of satisfaction that her kids are not starving and they are safe. If you agree that every mother should live in peace and with minimum sense of satisfaction then, present day ground reality is a serious matter and needs to be changed at the earliest.

While you are thinking about it, please read on and also think, what will be your contribution to address these concerns and how to make Mothers' Happy.

Protection and preservation of Mother Earth is the first step in this direction.

When it come to providing food to kids, the ground reality from all over the world is as follows.

Please read the graphs and names of the regions very carefully.

The above mentioned slide indicates the Proportion of the population estimated to be at risk of caloric inadequacyThis is the traditional FAO hunger indicator, adopted as official Millennium Development Goal indicator for goal 1, target 1.9.
The above mentioned slide indicates the total value of Annual Food Production, as estimated by  FAO and published by FAOSTAT in International Dollars (I $) divided by the total populationIt provides a cross country comparable measure of the relative economic size of the food production sector in the country.

In the above slide you will notice the Domestic Food Price Level. It is an important indicator for global monitoring of food security because it compares the relative price of food across countries and over time.

The Domestic Food Price Level Index is calculated by dividing the  Food Purchasing Power Parity (FPPP) by the General PPP, thus providing an index of the price of food in the country relative to the price of the generic consumption basket.

The depth of the food deficit indicates how many calories would be needed to lift the undernourished from their status, everything else being constant. The average intensity of food deprivation of the undernourished, estimated as the difference between the average dietary energy requirement and the average dietary energy consumption of the undernourished population (food-deprived), is multiplied by the number of undernourished to provide an estimate of the total food deficit in the country, which is then normalized by the total population
In brief, unless we address food security problems of the world, Mother's Day Celebrations should act as reminder for all of us about hungry and malnourished kids in the lap of mother.  Unless we address this basic need of the society, Mother's day celebration should force us to think about our food policies and how to make World Free of Hunger.

Let us work to make World Free of Hunger,
so that Mothers can live in peace.
The best way to say, "Thank you Mummy".
