Increasing Food Imports will derail "Make in India" story Traditional Approaches can't address Food Security and Inflation Challenges Question: 1. How much FDI coming into India for Manufacturing Sector? 2. How much foreign exchange is going out of India for buying food and agriculture products like Edible oils, pulses, timber, leather, spices, etc? Please calculate food imports and FDI in Manufacturing for the last 5 years and make projections for next 5 years. Also calculate how many people are going with food or underfed or malnourished. This will expose the true status of food security in India. Food Inflation is a permanent and most important challenge for Indian Economic Environment due to rising population and shrinking natural resources.  Caution: Before you look at any statistics of Government of India related to food, please add 15 million population on per year basis to the year of data and current year to make sense ...

Independence from Inflation - Consumer Price Index exposes reality - Food security is the first thing which any citizen expects from the elected government.  Food security is Fundamental Human Right. Nothing else is more important than food security  for existence of any living creature.  Every Government in power claims that they have improved food security, but the facts remain that large percentage of common men suffer from serious malnutrition and nutrition related health problems.  This growing number clearly a tangible evidence that governments failed in achieving minimum, food security for the citizens of the country.  The arguments are many, why food is not reaching the masses.   One important parameter is that affordability of food, this is linked to Consumer Price Index.  Let us analyse what is Consumer Price Index in India: 60% of Consume...

Why Misleading Policies and Politics over Pulses Crisis?

Why Misleading Policies & Politics over Pulses Crisis? Are political parties ignorant of ground reality or they deliberately misleading the nation? By: Vijay Sardana Updates on twitter:  @vijaysardana On 29 th July 2016, main opposition party of India issued a press statement on pulses crisis and also raised issues in parliament on pulses inflation and supply crisis and how country is looted by traders with the support of ruling party. There were very strong words used. In my reply, I am also trying to use the words which should convey the same intensity. By no means I want to undermine political establishments and political people, they play important role in policy making, but when some political representatives from opposition camps, are trying to mislead the public at large for political gains, by defaming whole pulses trade, it is not appreciated. Please read the Press note mentioned above, this is a classic document to understand how little backgroun...

Indian Dairy Industry facing the Leadership Challenge “National Dairy Plan needs critical review” By: Vijay Sardana Leading Agribusiness and Bio-economy Expert Blog: “Vijay Sardana Online” Population of India in 2020-21 will be about 1.326 billion. According to RDA -2010 for moderately active person, the milk requirement is 300 ml per day. At the rate of 300 ml per day per person, India needs about 145 million tons of milk per year. Let us add another 10% i.e. 15 million tons for exports and other applications. The total demand should not exceed about 160 million tons. National Dairy Plan is proposing 200 million tons milk production: 1.     What is the calculation behind these numbers? 2.     How much feed and fodder is required to produce the 200 million tons of milk? 3.     Do we have land and water to produce this excess quantity of milk? 4.     What will be the environmental impact of excess p...

Is India outsourcing her food security and at what cost?

Image
Imported Edible oils, Imported Pulses and now Imported Maize  Is India outsourcing her food security and at what cost? Government of India has allowed import of maize, to meet the growing demand of maize and shrinking supply base to meet the round the year demand from poultry and starch industry. Till last week government and Niti Aayog was claiming India is food secure and we have enough food to meet the demand of people and livestock of this country. Today, India is forced to allow import of corn to control maize prices. Look at the average maize prices in last one year in India: These wide fluctuation clearly indicates that demand supply mismatch exist. Sharp rise and fall of prices  indicates  that  trade is not sure how much supplies India will have this year. This also indicate unreliable data management in the country. On the other hand global prices ...
