After 4 years of training, “Agniveer” will be ideally suitable to strengthen “Make in India”
India is on the way to becoming USD 5 trillion economy. Huge investment is required, but there is a shortage of skilled and disciplined workforce.
One of the major constraints in achieving manufacturing excellence in India, which is hurting the Make in India mission is the lack of a competent workforce who can function as a strong bridge between the manufacturing shop floor and management of the business. Lack of Supervisors who can understand the role of quality and efficacy in the manufacturing process. Inadequate quality, poor service standards, poor productivity, and delayed delivery are serious issues hurting the Make in India Mission.
Agniveer can fill this gap, if planned properly.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a typical Shop Floor Supervisor in manufacturing set-up:
First-hand working with the team
Oversees daily work of employees, creates, and manages employee schedule
Train new employees
Provides regular employee training
Warns and disciplines workers not working to company standards.
Reviews work completed to ensure it is up to quality standards
Capabilities to Build and Test systems
Understands and delivers within budget
Enforces all health and safety policies on the shop floor, including
Ensuring that the shop area is clean & organised.
Possesses solid analytical and problem-solving abilities to assist engineers and project managers to address and resolve design & customer issues.
Maintains tooling and consumables as per the necessary quantities to support workload
Possesses detailed knowledge of maintenance and manufacturing.
Has basic computer skills.
Updates Project logbook with any additional work added to manufacturing scope.
Supports engineering and drafting with correct manufacturing standards and procedures.
Understands the concept of basic engineering for controls, Instrumentation, sensors, cabling, etc.
Assists in the layouts and operational design on the shopfloor
Performs mechanical testing, which includes ensuring all components are assembled as per General Arrangement drawing and ensuring they are mounted correctly and to industry standard.
Communication and Reporting skills
Other soft skills to work within organisations
Able to motivate the teams of workers to deliver excellence. They will act as role models for the rest of the worker's team.
Agniveer will have the following Qualifications which will make them ideally fit for the jobs:
High School education and above
4 years of prior work experience in a disciplined organisation
Must have a reasonable understanding of various operational issues and team management
Must have a mechanical aptitude
Must be able to read and comprehend verbal and written instructions in English and another language
Must be physically fit and able to lift and lower reasonable weights
Must be able to work overtime as required
Being initiative-taking and working as a team member
Work well alone when unsupervised
Must be able to travel to customer sites.
Can be sent to site without supervision.
Check and modify tasks to suit the outcome as per instructions
Effective communication skills and ability to work well with others
This will also reduce lawlessness and quality issues on shop floors.
The way forward for a better future for India and Agniveer:
Agniveer those who are coming out of 4 years of rigorous organisational training and after experiencing the merit of team building and discipline, can be groomed in various sectors. These trained and groomed Agniveer will become especially useful assets for the nation’s “Make in India'' mission.
MoD with the help of other industries departments can identify the required skills sets for the Indian industry
Identify the ITIs and upgrade them with the help of Industries so that these Agraveer can be groomed properly so that at the age of 25-26 years they are ready to shoulder key responsibilities at respectable salaries.
Many can join FPOs and Cooperatives and build the agriculture sector as well.
After One year residential and paid internships at these ITIs will be absorbed by the sponsoring industry. This can be a joint initiative and a separate Skill development organisation as a society.
The suppliers to defence forces must provide priority to the young and deserving candidates.
This will bridge the critical gap of skilled supervisors in the Indian manufacturing sector and boost “Make in India”.
